The company is rigorous in their updates and is always developing new tools for making quality scans from any format the scanner can handle. SRDx, which comes in SilverFast’s Ai Studio 8 scanner software, is a dust and scratch removal clean-up tool for black-and-white negatives and Kodachrome. That’s all changed with a new breakthrough in scanning technology from LaserSoft Imaging called SRDx, which can work with scanners without the need for installed IR-channel capability. This not only saves editing time, but also enables a very precise correction of my black-and-white scans nothing left to be desired. A key point here is the use of layers and layer masks. This made cleanup of these images a particularly laborious task that required patience, skill and select image editing programs. The SilverFast SRDx plug-in allows me to combine filter settings for dust and scratch removal from SilverFast with versatile Photoshop features. The interface is hard to learn, with out-of-date user manuals and automatic settings that yield sub-optimal results. However, the software itself assumes that scans are principally used for print, rather than the web. The only problem was that because of the distinct nature of their emulsions, black-and-white negatives and specifically Kodachrome slides could not benefit from this procedure. The strength of SilverFast is the quality of the images it creates. The advantage over the dust and scratch noise filter in Photoshop is the precise display with the option Mark defects. This software-hardware solution worked with numerous scanners by isolating the offending dust and scratches on a separate infrared channel that it then dumped when the final scan was made. With the new SRDx plug-in, as we know from the market-leading scanner software SilverFast, Photoshop can now eliminate image defects in a controlled way. It's a disapointment to have to constantly upgrade the software to get access to the core functionalities of the scanner (namely, the 16 bits output + the IR channel + the multi-exposure at once), especially as it ends up with a piece of software redundant with Photoshop or Lightroom (but significantly less efficient and user-friendly).Īll I would like to do is to produce a clean color neutral 16 bits RGB scan on which low-level corrections using the scanner features as been applied (like the IR dust removal, multi-exposure and film color calibration), then send it as a 16 bits RGB TIFF file to Photoshop or Lightroom to perform higher-level edits just as every digital RAW file from modern DSLR. Until August 2016, I was able to produce 16 bits "HDR" files and apply corrections on them directly in SE Plus (GANE, iSRD, SRDx, etc.) which was nice.
